Leading Volunteers Masterclass

Professional development: Opportunity to explore leadership practices for those who work with & lead volunteers.

While much has been written and developed to assist volunteer managers to manage their programs, there is little that recognises the importance of leadership in this increasingly complex field.

The program will bring together volunteer managers from across different sectors and will have a strong practice focus.

The Masterclass will focus on:

  • Future trends, opportunities and challenges for volunteer programs.
  • Working with the theory, strategies and practices of leadership for volunteer managers.
  • Managing change in volunteer programs with particular focus on tools and practices.
  • Making your program count within your own organisation and externally with tools to measure impact that go beyond economic valuing.

Session 1: Strategic leadership for volunteer programs

This interactive session will consider the changing nature of volunteering and consider the strategic issues that face programs now and in the future. We will explore participants own experiences as well as perspectives and research in Australia and internationally. New work in the past few years both highlights and challenges the future of volunteer management. Three different models of leadership will be examined (enabling leadership, entrepreneurial leadership and adaptive leadership) and how these apply to the work of volunteer managers.

Session 2: The practices of leadership, change management &  innovation for volunteer managers

While focusing on adaptive leadership we will consider national and international writing on what strategies leaders are using to create innovative volunteer programs. The heart of adaptive leadership is challenging current systems and behaviours which are not effective, and facilitating the creation of new solutions and ways of working through collaboration and participation. This workshop will provide a set of approaches and tools to managing change through the organisation. These tools were developed to support an extensive program delivered across Tasmania for TasCOSS.

Anastasia Magriplis will provide a perspective on leading a major volunteer program and focusing on strategic change in UnitingCare Community.

Session 3: Increasing your impact & influence

This session will focus on how to measure the impact of your program and how to increase your influence within your organisation. We will explore how to make your program count within your own organisation and externally considering the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement and a set of tools to measure impact that go beyond economic valuing. We will also look at the latest thinking on influencing within your organisation and developing your own leadership pathway.

Session 4: What this means for me

A chance to consider the impact of the day’s discussions on your own program. The session will provide the chance for discussing and further extending the learning from today.
